Homer. Not Simpson.
July 26, 2026
Where is your Ithaca?
And is the practice you’re building taking you there?
The goal isn’t a bigger ship. It’s a ship that takes you home.
Your Odyssey
What Homer Can Teach the Modern Dental Practice Owner
Greek Homer. Not a Simpson.
Why would Christopher Nolan, one of the most celebrated directors of our generation, choose to retell a 3,000-year-old story?
Perhaps because beneath the gods, monsters, storms, and temptations lies something timeless: the struggle to remain true to what matters and find our way home.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll explore Homer’s Odyssey and the wisdom it still offers dental practice owners navigating their own professional and personal journeys.
Because the goal was never merely to build a bigger ship.
The goal was to build a ship capable of taking you home.
It Starts With Ithaca
When we first meet Odysseus, he isn’t sailing triumphantly toward home.
He’s stranded on Calypso’s island.
That may be where many dentists find themselves today.
Not necessarily in a terrible place. The practice may be profitable. The schedule may be full. The team may be functioning. You may even enjoy the company of a Princess Nausicaa along the way.
And if your ambition is to become Robinson Crusoe, perhaps life on an island is perfectly acceptable.
But is it home?
A practice can become its own island: familiar, comfortable, and difficult to leave. Yet the life surrounding it may no longer resemble the one its owner once hoped to create.
More patients. More production. More employees. More obligations.
And perhaps less freedom, less joy, and less control.
Calypso isn’t Ithaca.
Where Is Home?
Odysseus knew where he was trying to go.
Ithaca.
It was his destination, his anchor, his safe port, and his North Star.
Every practice owner needs an Ithaca too.
Before deciding whether to join another insurance plan, drop one, open another location, add another service, hire an associate, or sell to a DSO, you need to know where you eventually want to go.
A larger practice?
A more profitable one?
A more meaningful one?
Or a practice that provides greater autonomy, better relationships, more time, and a life beyond dentistry?
None of these choices is inherently right or wrong. Their wisdom depends upon where they take you.
That leads to one essential question:
Does this take me closer to Ithaca—or farther away?
Too many dentists begin with the ship. They focus on operatories, production, technology, new patients, associates, and scale.
They keep making the ship bigger.
But bigger isn’t a destination.
And a bigger ship traveling in the wrong direction only takes you farther from home.
Chart Your Course
Your odyssey has already begun.
The question is whether your current course will take you toward the professional and personal life you once imagined—or leave you stranded on an island you never intended to call home.
Take a moment and ask yourself:
Where is my Ithaca?
And is the practice I’m building actually taking me there?
If you’re no longer certain, that may be the most important conversation you can have about your practice.
In the next chapter of Your Odyssey, we’ll encounter:
The Sirens
When Bright Shiny Objects Obscure the Path Home
Every practice owner hears their song—the newest technology, another service, another location, another marketing promise, or another opportunity that seems too good to ignore.
Some may move you forward. Others may quietly pull you off course.
When you know where home is, not every song deserves to change your course.
