What Would Thomas Lynch Jr. Say?

Most Americans have never heard of Thomas Lynch Jr.

At just 27 years old, he was one of the youngest signers of the Declaration of Independence. A few years later, while sailing to Europe in hopes of restoring his failing health, his ship disappeared at sea. He was only thirty.

But perhaps the most remarkable part of his story isn’t how he died. It’s what he left behind.

Having no children, Lynch included an unusual provision in his will: anyone who inherited his family estate had to adopt the Lynch surname. To him, preserving the family’s identity and legacy mattered as much as preserving its wealth.

That made me wonder.

If Thomas Lynch Jr. had owned a dental practice instead of a family estate, what would he have wanted to survive him?

The highest purchase price?

The fastest closing?

Or a philosophy of care, a reputation built over decades, and a name patients had trusted with their health?

Today, dentistry is experiencing a level of consolidation unlike anything in its history. Private equity firms and large corporate organizations continue to acquire practices at an unprecedented pace. As a result, many transition conversations revolve almost entirely around financial metrics.

“What’s my EBITDA?”

“What’s my multiple?”

“How much can I get?”

Those are legitimate questions.

But they aren’t the only questions that matter.

What happens to your patients after you’re gone?

What happens to your team?

What happens to the culture you’ve intentionally built?

What happens to the values that guided every clinical and business decision you’ve made?

Will anyone remember why your practice existed in the first place?

Many dentists have spent thirty, forty or more years building something far more valuable than a business. They’ve built trust. They’ve built relationships. They’ve created a culture that patients and team members genuinely value. They’ve become woven into the fabric of their communities.

That legacy deserves to be considered alongside the balance sheet.

When I sold my own practice, I discovered something important: the relationship doesn’t end when the sale closes. Years later, former patients still reach out asking for advice. They aren’t calling because of the equipment or the building. They’re calling because of the trust that was built over decades.

If I could design the ideal transition, it wouldn’t simply be selling a practice. It would be developing an associate into a partner, someone who understands not only how the practice operates, but why it exists. Someone who will carry the mission forward long after my name is no longer on the door.

Every practice owner should ask a simple question:

Am I selling operatories and equipment… or am I passing on a philosophy of care that deserves to outlive me?

I suspect Thomas Lynch Jr. would have appreciated the distinction.

Money creates an inheritance.

Values create a legacy.

At The Liberated Practice, we believe the ultimate measure of a successful career isn’t what someone was willing to pay for your practice. It’s whether the principles, relationships, and culture that made it exceptional continue to thrive after you’re gone.

Your name may eventually come off the letterhead.

But if you’ve built the right practice, your values live on.
