Memorial. Gratitude. Independence.
May 24, 2026
Memorial Day is not the opening of summer.
It is not the barbecue, the sales, the white pants, or the long weekend.
Those things may surround the day.
But they are not the day.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day began as a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers — to pause, remember, and express gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
And maybe that is why Memorial Day matters so much now.
Because we live in a time when the past is too often used as a justification rather than a lesson.
A reason to stay angry.
A reason to stay divided.
A reason to demand.
A reason to blame.
But Memorial Day reminds us how the past is supposed to be framed.
Not as a weapon.
As a teacher.
Not as an excuse.
As a responsibility.
Not as a grievance to be polished.
As a sacrifice to be honored.
Memorial. Gratitude. Independence.
Memorial is the past.
Gratitude is the present.
Independence is the American ideal.
And without Memorial Day, there could never be an Independence Day.
Because independence is not declared once and then magically preserved forever. The Founders could declare it. They could sign it. They could risk their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor for it.
But others would have to defend it.
Others would have to preserve it.
Others would have to die for it.
That is the bridge from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July.
Memorial Day is the price.
Independence Day is the promise.
One without the other becomes incomplete.
Independence Day without Memorial Day becomes noise. Fireworks without reflection. Flags without gratitude. Freedom without responsibility.
Memorial Day without Independence Day becomes sorrow without purpose. Sacrifice without the reminder that what was protected still matters.
Together, they teach us something essential.
Memorial. Gratitude. Independence.
The past should be remembered.
The present should be received with gratitude.
The future should be aimed toward freedom, responsibility, and human possibility.
That lesson matters for every American.
And it matters deeply for healthcare leaders.
Because leadership, like patriotism, can become performative.
There is the Decoration Leader.
The Decoration Leader puts on a show. The words sound right. The symbols are in place. The staff lunch is ordered. The appreciation post goes up. The ceremony looks meaningful.
That has value.
Symbols matter.
But decoration is not the same as remembrance.
Then there is the Memorial Leader.
The Memorial Leader goes deeper.
They understand the debt.
They know that nothing meaningful is built alone. Not a country. Not a family. Not a healthcare practice.
They remember the people who carried the burden before them.
The mentor who taught them.
The spouse who believed before the dream looked believable.
The team member who stayed late.
The assistant who calmed the anxious patient.
The hygienist who noticed what others missed.
The front desk person who protected the schedule and absorbed the frustration.
The patient who trusted them.
The Memorial Leader notices.
Then says thank you.
And means it.
That is leadership.
Memorial. Gratitude. Independence.
Then there is the failed leader.
The failed leader does the opposite of both.
They do not put on a show for others.
They are the show.
They do not express gratitude.
They demand it.
They remind everyone how hard they work, how much they carry, how little they are appreciated, and why others should be grateful just to be there.
That is not leadership.
That is insecurity wearing a crown.
Or, in the spirit of Yankee Doodle, insecurity wearing a powdered wig.
Healthcare does not need more leaders who demand gratitude.
It needs leaders who model it.
Because gratitude is not soft.
Gratitude is culture.
Gratitude is perspective.
Gratitude is the antidote to entitlement.
A grateful leader does not ignore problems. A grateful leader can still hold people accountable, raise standards, address conflict, and make hard decisions.
But gratitude changes the spirit in which those decisions are made.
It allows a leader to say:
“I see what you contribute. I value who you are. And because of that, I believe we can do better.”
That is different from criticism.
That is stewardship.
And stewardship is what freedom requires.
Because independence is not license.
Independence is not “I get to do whatever I want.”
Independence is the responsibility to become worthy of what others sacrificed to protect.
That is true in a nation.
It is true in a family.
It is true in a business.
It is true in a healthcare practice.
The leader who forgets the past becomes entitled.
The leader who remembers the past becomes grateful.
The leader who becomes grateful is far more likely to preserve the freedom they inherited.
Memorial. Gratitude. Independence.
So enjoy the weekend.
Have the barbecue.
Welcome the summer.
And when July Fourth comes, enjoy the fireworks too.
Sing Yankee Doodle if you want.
But before the fireworks, remember the graves.
Before the celebration, remember the sacrifice.
Before we claim freedom as our right, remember those who treated it as their responsibility.
Because Memorial Day is not merely about what was lost.
It is about what was given.
And Independence Day is not merely about what was declared.
It is about what must still be protected.
That is the American rhythm.
Memorial. Gratitude. Independence.
The past remembered.
The present received.
The ideal pursued.
And perhaps that leaves every leader with one simple question:
Are you decorating the moment?
Are you memorializing the sacrifice?
Or have you made yourself the parade?
