It happens more often than it should: a truck slams into an overpass. Or, in one recent and tragic case, a Mexican naval vessel crashes into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two and injuring others. You’d think with all our modern tech—GPS, tide charts, height warnings—someone would’ve noticed the clearance issue. But that’s the thing about momentum: it’s easy to forget to look up when you’re barreling forward.

Sound familiar?

That same crash-and-burn pattern plays out in dental and healthcare practices chasing so-called exponential growth. Everyone wants to “scale.” Everyone wants more—more patients, more revenue, more locations. But without clear vision, ethical navigation, and conscious course correction, “more” can quickly become a recipe for burnout, chaos, and missed purpose.

Somewhere Along the Way, We Confused “More” with “Meaning”

The business world is obsessed with hockey-stick growth graphs. Entrepreneurs chase them. Consultants promise them. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: too often, we end up growing the wrong things—like stress, misalignment, and staff turnover.

Maybe it’s time to screw exponential growth and start pursuing exponential happiness instead.

Jefferson Had It Right

When Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence, he didn’t promise us unlimited productivity or social media engagement. He spoke of the pursuit of happiness—happiness that emerges from health, learning, and virtue.

It’s a quieter kind of success. One rooted in dignity, trust, and fulfillment. One that rarely trends, but always endures.

What Viktor Frankl Taught Us About Fulfillment

Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning, made it clear: pleasure can’t give our lives meaning. Happiness isn’t found in the chase—it’s discovered in service, purpose, and integrity.

Contrast that with the prevailing advice: Scale. Profit. Repeat. That mantra might spike revenue, but it won’t soothe your soul or make your team want to show up on Monday.

And it certainly won’t keep you from metaphorically crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge.

Strategic Growth with a Conscience

Let’s be real: money matters. No money, no mission is a mantra I subscribe to. But when money becomes the mission, the mission loses its soul.

That’s why I turned to Dr. Robert Cialdini’s work on ethical influence. His seven principles—used with integrity—don’t manipulate; they motivate. They honor human behavior and preserve the dignity of those we serve.

At The Liberated Practice, we don’t teach gimmicks. We teach ethical persuasion, team alignment, and growth strategies that light people up instead of wearing them down.

And of all the letters after my name, the one that means the most is from the American College of Dentists—because ethics, not ego, build the future.

The Real Formula for Fulfillment

So if exponential growth isn’t the answer, what is?

Here’s our formula:

Exponential Happiness = Purposeful Growth + Ethical Influence + Relational Practice + Daily Fulfillment

This kind of growth doesn’t crash your schedule, burn out your team, or leave you wondering, “What was it all for?” This is growth with intention. Growth with a soul.

This is The Liberated Practice.
